About us

Some words about us

A branch of the American Cancer Society (ACS), Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) at the University of Chicago joins over 175 other CAC chapters at universities across the nation to stand up and finish the fight against cancer. We plan and implement programs pertinent to college-aged adults, aiming to educate on cancer prevention, detection, survivorship, advocacy, and awareness. Additionally, we are dedicated to providing resources and support to those affected by cancer on UChicago’s campus and surrounding area. This includes events such as academic panels with renowned oncologists and faculty members, screenings and discussions of movies featuring cancer patients, tobacco risk awareness campaigns, and painting campus pink for breast cancer awareness. CAC promotes growth in its student members by holding social events, encouraging leadership development, and interacting with the cancer community. Our paramount event of the year is Relay for Life, where hundreds of participants from Chicagoland and beyond come together to celebrate the hope for a cure during Spring Quarter on UChicago’s campus.

Relay For Life

Relay for Life is an overnight fundraising walk and the world’s largest, most impactful event to fight cancer. The University of Chicago chapter of Colleges Against Cancer hosts a Relay for Life event every spring quarter in the Henry Crown Field House where the UChicago campus and surrounding community come together to work for a cure and honor those affected by cancer. Members of each team take turns walking around the track and enjoying food, games, and entertainment. A family-friendly event for the entire community, Relay at UChicago includes musical performances, Zumba classes, face painting, bean bag toss, karate, and moon bounces, among other fun activities. Highlights also include the opening ceremony, the survivors’ lap, the caregivers’ lap, and the Luminaria ceremony, which remembers loved ones lost to the disease. In 2015, over 500 community members raised $23,000 at UChicago’s Relay for Life. This money helps the ACS assist cancer patients every day through research, lodging, transportation, and support programs.
